Dear colleagues,
It is our pleasure to invite you to the screening of the documentary 'Those Who Dare' (2015) about the decisive chain of events to restore independence of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania between 1986 and 1991 and the reaction of the West to these movements.
Introduced by Jon Baldvin Hannibalsson, an Icelandic politician and diplomat whose personal connections and interest in the USSR were the driving force behind Iceland’s pivotal support for the freedom of the Baltic states, the screening will take place on Tuesday, 26 January at 18:00 – 20:00 in the European Parliament (JAN 6Q2). It will be followed by Q&A with Mr Hannibalsson and MEPs as well as a reception.
From 1989 onwards, Mr Hannibalsson together with his Danish counterpart Mr Uffe Elleman Jensen had actively supported the Baltic nations’ struggle in the European and international arena. In August 1991, following the coup d’etat in Moscow, Iceland became the first country to recognize the Baltic countries.
