Learn Latvian language abroad

The Latvian Language Agency (LLA) is a government institution under the supervision of the Minister for Education and Science. It works to strengthen the status, and to promote sustainable development of the Latvian language as the official (state) language in the Republic of Latvia and an official language in the European Union.
The Latvian Language Agency has been established on 1 July 2009 following the reorganisation of the State Language Agency and the National Agency for the Latvian Language Learning.
The Latvian Language Agency is carrying out the official language policy formulated in The Principles of the Official language Policy for 2005-2014 and The Official language Policy Programme for 2006-2010.
Functions of the Latvian Language Agency

  1. Analysing the situation and sociolinguistic processes within the Latvian language as the official language.
  2. Providing support to the Latvian language learning in Latvia and abroad.
  3. Raising competitiveness of the Latvian language in Latvia and abroad.

Support to the Latvian language abroad is provided in two areas:
-          support to learning Latvian as a foreign language at universities abroad;
-          support to the Latvian language among the diaspora.

Support to learning Latvian as a foreign language at universities abroad:

Currently 22 universities in foreign countries offer an opportunity to study Latvian.

Support to the Latvian language among the Diaspora
The LLA supports the Latvian language in the diaspora:
-          evaluates education programmes and teaching/learning aids designed for the disapora;
-          designs and publishes teaching/learning aids and methodological recommendations for users;
-          organises courses in language teaching methodology for educators;
-          coordinates methodological principles and facilitates experience sharing;
-          ensures that Latvian language teachers are available in certain specific locations in the world;
-          etc.
